Barbie The Movie with ASL
Barbie The Movie (American Sign Language version) is now streaming! Greta Gerwig’s box office winner arrived this winter on Max and with it, a version featuring ASL interpreter and performer, Leila Hanaumi. Max commented on the big release saying its production was, “grounded in research and feedback from the Deaf community, as well as counsel from community leaders”.

Leila Hanaumi, a star in her own right, is an accomplished ASL interpreter, whose previous work includes Deaf Austin Theatre’s The Laramie Project and an ASL cover for Tove Lo’s β€œTrue Romance” music video.

Super Bowl
Super Bowl LVIII brought on ASL performers one again and we hope to see this continue into the next years. Actor Daniel Durant, who starred in the Academy Award-winning movie β€œCODA,” perfomed the National Anthem. Actress and model Anjel PiΓ±ero signed β€œAmerica the Beautiful”, and Shaheem Sanchez, actor, dancer, and choreographer, signed β€œLift Every Voice and Sing.” Sanchez also performed the ASL Halftime Show. The ASL pre-game performances and the ASL Halftime show were produced in partnership with Alexis Kashar of LOVE SIGN and Howard Rosenblum of the NAD.

February is Black History Month! Here are two things you can learn right now!

Firstly, did you know that there is Black American Sign Language (BASL)? BASL is estimated to be used by at least 50% of the Black and Deaf community. The language survived through the years by being passed on generationally within families and communities. The divergence of the two is due largely to segregation in the US, especially the system of segregated schools.

Secondly, one of our team members found a YouTube video where you can test your ASL and learn about the legendary Harriet Tubman. Give it a try!
