Not everybody has access to one of those long-handled straw basket dealies they use in church, alright? I don’t even know the first thing about where you’d get one of those if you wanted one.

When you’re taking up a collection for a bet, for fantasy sports, or for an extra large sausage-and-cheese during the game you gotta improvise.

​Yeah, there are apps coming out left and right where you can split a bill electronically, but where the hell is the fun in that? There’s just something better about doing it the old-fashioned way, tossing a twenty in your cap and passing it around the group before you start your poker game. Didn’t put the twenty in the hat, Bill? Well you’re not getting dealt in.

A scally just makes sense there. I mean, what else are you gonna use instead? A sock? A Frisbee? A fuckin’… road cone, I dunno? There’s nothing else. And there never will be anything else like it.

There are “Pizza Cities.” There are “Beer Cities.” There are “Music Cities.” A lot of places have their specialties, but no city in the country — maybe even in the world — is more of a Storyteller City than Boston, Massachusetts.

Being able to tell a good head-turner is like a real sort of currency here. See a quiet dude at the bar with his buddies? Dollars to donuts he can’t time his punchlines right. Wonder what that ugly guy is doing with that good lookin’ girl over there? Bet you that man can spin a good yarn.

In fact, in Boston, storytelling is more than just currency. Here, it’s part of life itself. Here life is about making story-worthy decisions and then about telling those stories.

You sit at the dinner table on those bitter-cold January nights and you listen to your old man go on about his days on Cushing Street as a young punk. At first you didn’t realize it, but as you get a little older you see his tales are full of wit, candor, a little exaggeration. My father himself was very calculated in his delivery. I took on what I could of that. My brothers, too.

It ain’t a skill-set you just have. You develop it over time, you hone it into something worthwhile after hearing stories time and time again. Thanks to our old man, my brothers and I can sit up, drinking beer and telling our stories until the sun comes up. We live life to tell stories, a brother of mine says. And though he’s rarely right about anything, he’s right about that.

Boston Scally loves a good storyteller. And that’s why we’re going to ask you right now to tell us your best story. Doesn’t have to be about Boston (though of course we always love it) and doesn’t have to be about your cap, though bonus points for that. Anything you got. Send us a funny story. Life Lessons w/ Boston Scally

​In Boston, everybody’s got a scally. Your uncle has a scally. Your coworkers have a scally. Your buddy Fitz who can’t hold down a job has a scally. The scally cap is Boston’s hat. As a true-blooded Bostonian, I’ve been a fan of this style of hat my whole life. Of course it just made sense that somebody in Boston would’ve had already made the leap: Be a Bostonian designin’ Boston’s favorite hat for other Bostonians.

It’s so simple you just could overlook it.

Back in 2013, I asked around to see if I could find an official Boston city scally cap for myself. And sure enough: There wasn’t one.

Not a single damn authentic hat in the entire city created by other Bostonians. There were some fancy alternatives, some that cost in the hundred-dollar range. That didn’t seem working class to me… to make something a man couldn’t feel right buying for himself. So, I made my own company.

That’s the story. I started Boston Scally because I wanted it to already exist. We made hats until we found one that both looked great and perfectly represented the city’s attitude. I started selling soon after and I learned how other blue-collar folks around the country felt a sort of camaraderie with the look. We expanded.

Ever since then, Boston Scally has found its rightful place as the hat of the city and has since brought a little of that scrappy, sarcastic vibe to whoever else wants to show off their “pull no punches” side. We’ve gone worldwide, and just like the rest of Boston, we have no intention of stopping any time soon.

So if there is a lesson here, it’s that you shouldn’t assume. You should really ask questions instead. At the worst, you might get an answer you don’t like. At the best, you might get a sweet ass hat out of the deal.

Welcome to the Boston Scally Family

Just like any other family, we don’t all look alike. And hell, we don’t even like each other all the time, but we are all part of a group of dedicated, like-minded people: the hard-working, smartass, blue-collar types known to inhabit all of New England. We’re the kind of people you want on your side.

We like football, basketball, and hockey. We love a good beer, a good laugh, and the Sox — in that order.

Unless we’ve had too many beers. Then we love everything, in all orders equally.

We razz our buddies when they do something stupid (like naming their kid Tom Brady). We only answer to our last names (unless our mothers are talking to us). We’re happy as hell that you’ve decided to join us and we hope that you’ll stick around for the ride.
